A Train Master is an administrative position, one that oversees the day-to-day operation of all trains within their assigned territory. The Train Master must be familiar with all aspects of locomotive and yard operations. Train Masters, like other railroad occupations, do not operate on a 9 to 5, 40-hour work week schedule. A Train Master must be able to perform efficiently in a high-stress, often hectic environment.
Train Master Job Duties
- Supervises all activities of the train crews within territory
- Communicates with customers to ensure proper switching of rail cars
- Relays orders to locomotive engineer and train crews
- Schedule train crews, approve time off
- Schedule preventative and necessary maintenance
- Complete accident reports as necessary
- Be aware of track conditions within territory
- Enforces policies of railroad company and Federal Railroad Administration
- May be involved in the hiring, disciplining and termination of employees
- Enforce safety regulations
Train Master Training and Salary
A Train Master is not an entry-level position. Train Masters are promoted from within the railroad. Train Masters generally have been brakemen/switchmen or signal operators, conductors and locomotive engineers prior to becoming Train Master. A Train Master salary can be $60,000 or more per year.
